Understanding Sodium Metasilicate Anhydrous and its industrial value
Sodium Metasilicate Anhydrous is a white, free-flowing granular or powder inorganic compound with the molecular formula Na2SiO3 and a molecular weight of 122.06. It has a bulk density of 1.00–1.35 g/cm³ and a melting point of 1089°C.
With a combined content of total alkali and silica (SiO2) exceeding 95%, it delivers significantly greater calcium and magnesium ion sequestration capacity than hydrated sodium metasilicate. It is non-toxic, odorless, and environmentally friendly.
Unlike hydrated forms, the anhydrous grade does not release water of crystallization, providing excellent compatibility with organic chlorine compounds, peroxides, bleaching agents, and bleach activators in detergent formulations. It serves as an effective replacement for Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) in synthetic detergents.
How This Grade Is Produced and Checked
Our anhydrous sodium metasilicate is made downstream of our own sodium silicate. The silicate solution is reacted with alkali to a fixed SiO₂/Na₂O molar ratio of 1.0; the water is then removed completely at high temperature and the product is milled or granulated. Because the silicate step is run in-house, the modulus entering the drying stage is controlled by the plant rather than bought in.
The critical control point for this grade is moisture pick-up after drying, since the anhydrous product is strongly hygroscopic. Every batch is released against Na₂O content, moisture, whiteness, dissolution behaviour and particle size, packed in sealed moisture-proof bags, and shipped with its own Certificate of Analysis. TDS and SDS are available for the grade.
