What a Silicate Factory Needs Before Quoting SMS

There is no single sodium metasilicate price per metric ton. A quotation is assembled from the product grade and specification, the raw material behind it, the order quantity, the packaging and how much of it fits in a container, the destination, the trade term and the freight on the day.

Is There a Fixed Sodium Metasilicate Price?

No. Sodium metasilicate does not have one fixed global price.

A supplier's quotation can change according to raw material costs, production conditions, packaging materials, shipping rates and the specific requirements of each order.

For example, the quotation for anhydrous sodium metasilicate may differ from the quotation for sodium metasilicate pentahydrate. Similarly, the price for a 1 MT trial order may be different from a full-container order.

For export orders, the quotation may also be provided on different Incoterms, such as:

• FOB
• CIF

Any two quotations therefore have to be read against exactly what each one includes.

The Components of a Quotation

Nine components go into the number.

1. Product Grade and Specification

Sodium metasilicate is available in different grades and forms, including:

• Anhydrous sodium metasilicate
• Sodium metasilicate pentahydrate

The required specification can also vary according to the application.

Important parameters may include:

• Na₂O content
• SiO₂ content
• SiO₂/Na₂O ratio or modulus
• Purity
• Crystal water
• Moisture
• Particle size
• Solubility
• Appearance

A quotation is therefore always tied to the actual specification being supplied.

Two products may both be sold as "sodium metasilicate" while having different specifications and different production costs.

2. Raw Material Quality and Batch Stability

Raw material selection is an important part of sodium metasilicate production cost.

3. Batch-by-Batch COA and Quality Verification

Another important consideration is quality verification.

Each commercial batch of sodium metasilicate supplied by Zhongzhi Chemical is tested, and a corresponding Certificate of Analysis (COA) is available for each batch.

The COA provides buyers with batch-specific quality information and allows the supplied material to be checked against the agreed product specification.

This is particularly important for industrial customers who use sodium metasilicate as a raw material in:

• 5–10 MT for a trial order
• 20–25 MT for a container shipment
• Multiple containers for regular supply

Larger orders can generally make better use of production and container capacity.

The quotation is calculated for the quantity stated, which is why the quantity is asked for first.

5. Packaging Can Change the Effective Price Per Ton

Packaging is the component most often left out of a price comparison.

However, packaging directly affects how much product can be loaded into a container and therefore affects the logistics cost allocated to each metric ton.

Zhongzhi Chemical commonly supplies sodium metasilicate in 25 kg bags and jumbo bags, depending on customer requirements.

For a standard 20GP container, loading capacity is approximately:

These figures are based on standard loading arrangements and may vary depending on packaging specifications, container requirements and shipping conditions.

25 kg Bags Without Pallets: When customers do not require pallets, approximately 25 metric tons of sodium metasilicate can generally be loaded into a standard 20GP container when using 25 kg bags. This configuration makes better use of available container space and can reduce the freight cost allocated to each metric ton. For buyers who have suitable unloading and handling arrangements at the destination, pallet-free loading can therefore be an economical option.

Jumbo Bags / Ton Bags: When sodium metasilicate is packed in jumbo bags, the typical loading quantity is approximately 20 metric tons per 20GP container. Although jumbo bags can provide handling advantages for some customers, the lower loading quantity means that the same container freight is distributed across fewer metric tons. As a result, the effective logistics cost per ton may be higher.

The packaging line therefore changes the effective cost per ton before freight is even added.

6. Why Container Loading Quantity Matters

Suppose two suppliers offer exactly the same FOB price per metric ton.

• Supplier A loads approximately 25 MT into a 20GP container.
• Supplier B loads approximately 20 MT into a 20GP container.

Even if the product price per ton is identical, the freight cost allocated to each ton will not necessarily be the same.

The simplified calculation is:

Freight Cost Per Ton = Container Freight ÷ Loaded Quantity

Therefore:

• 25 MT per container → lower freight allocation per ton
• 20 MT per container → higher freight allocation per ton

The delivered cost per ton is what the loading arrangement actually determines.

7. Pallets and Loading Requirements

Pallet requirements can also influence the final loading quantity.

If pallets are required, part of the container's available space and payload capacity is used for the pallets and associated loading arrangement.

If the buyer does not require pallets and the destination handling conditions allow pallet-free loading, more sodium metasilicate can generally be loaded.

Whether pallets are required is therefore one of the inputs to the quotation.

This seemingly small detail can affect the total logistics cost of a container shipment.

8. Shipping Destination and Freight

For international orders, the destination is another major component of the final quotation.

The same sodium metasilicate product can have different CIF prices depending on the destination port.

Factors may include:

• Ocean freight
• Container availability
• Shipping route
• Fuel costs
• Port conditions
• Destination port charges
• Inland transportation
• Seasonal shipping conditions

For this reason, a supplier cannot provide an accurate CIF quotation without knowing the destination.

The destination port, or at least the country, is needed before a CIF figure can be calculated.

9. FOB and CIF Prices Are Not the Same

The trade term decides which of the components above are inside the quoted number.

FOB Price: An FOB quotation generally covers the goods and the agreed export/loading responsibilities up to the named port under the applicable FOB terms.

CIF Price: A CIF quotation generally includes the product, ocean freight and marine insurance to the named destination port.

An FOB number and a CIF number are therefore two different quantities, not two prices for the same thing.

What Stays Fixed in a Quotation from This Plant

Three components do not move with the market: raw material sourcing is kept stable rather than switched to the cheapest lot available, every commercial batch is tested, and a batch-specific COA is issued. Packaging and container loading are worked out for each order so that the delivered cost per ton reflects the real loading arrangement.

What the Plant Needs to Prepare a Quotation

Because raw material, packaging and freight conditions change, a quotation is prepared for a specific order rather than published as a list price. The inputs are:

• Product: Anhydrous sodium metasilicate or sodium metasilicate pentahydrate
• Specification: Required technical specification or application
• Quantity: For example, 1 MT, 10 MT, 20 MT or 25 MT
• Packaging: 25 kg bags, jumbo bags or customized packaging
• Pallets: Required or not required
• Destination: Destination port or country
• Trade term: FOB, CIF or other required Incoterm

With these inputs the quotation is calculated for the actual product, loading arrangement and shipping conditions.

Each term is set by a decision made either at the plant or at the order stage.
